Downtown Armonk is seeing a changing of the guard.

Two longtime businesses, The Right Thing and Sheep Shack, are shutting their doors, while a host of new businesses will be opening soon.

Sheep Shack, which has sold women's clothes at 418 Main St. for 42 years will be closing at the end of February as its owner, Ronnie Zeidenberg, plans on retiring.

"It's been a very lucrative 42 years," Zeidenberg, who lives in Armonk, said. "I have wonderful customers, but it's time for me to move on. This is the right time."

Zeidenberg said it's a bittersweet feeling. Her customers are not taking it well, she said.

"They are very upset," Zeidenberg said. "They would like me for to stay. I greatly appreciate being a part of their lives. Armonk has been very good for to me. I will keep the memories."

The Right Thing, a card and gift shop on Main Street, also closed its doors, having been open since 1987, blaming the digital age.

While those stores are closing, others are opening. An Indian restaurant is opening on Old Route 22, while a dentists office will be opening on Main Street. Lifestyle Nutrition is also opening on Main Street and a florist shop will be replacing Sheep Shack.

"There is very little empty space in Armonk in total," Neal Schwartz, president of the Armonk Chamber of Commerce said. "It is difficult emotionally to watch any long time businesses shutter, but from a family run operation, this is more a matter of the age and desires of the owners, than a 'trend'. We feel fortunate to have a vibrant retail business community in Armonk."
