Fitness, Health-Care Centers To Spring Up In Harrison

HARRISON, N.Y. – Although two new Harrison additions – Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Life Time Fitness – won't be opening this year, a trustee is eagerly awaiting the day people can use both.

“We are certainly moving in a positive forward direction, and we’re very eagerly awaiting the opening of all of these,” said Marlane Amelio. “I think Harrison has a lot to look forward to. We are open for business.”

The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center will be open between fall and winter of 2015. Ground was broken on the facility at 500 Westchester Ave. on Dec. 20.

“We’re looking forward to the opening of Sloan-Kettering, which will enable people suffering from catastrophic illnesses to get top-notch care at a local facility by probably the leading experts in cancer care,” said Amelio. “It’ll be at their doorsteps at Sloan-Kettering.”

The 114,000-square-foot outpatient treatment facility “will offer area residents the most cancer care services, close to home,” said a statement from the organization. It will allow residents from Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Orange, and Rockland counties plus Fairfield County, Conn., to receive treatment there rather than in the farther away Manhattan facility.

“With an increasing incidence of cancer, especially as the population ages, as well as advances in early detection and treatment, more patients are surviving longer and will need continued care,” Dr. Maureen Killackey, deputy physician-in-chief and medical Ddirector of Memorial Sloan-Kettering’s Regional Care Network, said in a statement. “The new Harrison facility would allow our patients to receive Memorial Sloan-Kettering’s expertise in this outpatient setting, closer to home.”

Memorial Sloan-Kettering’s Sleepy Hollow facility has been around for 15 years and will remain open.

When it comes to fitness, Amelio is glad to see Life Time Fitness expand into Westchester. With 105 facilities throughout North America, the Harrison branch will be one of the largest when it debuts in spring 2014.

The two-story 209,000-square-foot facility will have more than 400 pieces of state-of-the-art exercise equipment plus indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a spa, a children’s center, a cafe, a rock-climbing wall and more.

“We are excited about our expansion in the New York market and the opportunity to bring our unique, family-oriented healthy way of life destination to the Harrison community,” Jeff Zwiefel, executive vice president and chief of operations, said during the October groundbreaking ceremony.

The new Life Time Fitness Center will bring an estimated $100 million to the county’s economy in its first three years, County Executive Rob Astorino said. It will also provide 350 construction jobs over the next 15 months and more than 250 part- and full-time jobs when it opens, said Jason Thunstrom, vice president for corporate communications.

“There’s a lot of very positive things,” Amelio said of the two new Harrison companies while also discussing a new supermarket. “We had DeCicco’s open up in Harrison, which is an incredible addition to Harrison shopping. To have gourmet foods at reasonable prices located in our town. It’s a wonderful family-run business.”
