HARRISON, N.Y. -- Employees at Harrison businesses said the heat has been difficult to deal with but, in some ways, it has helped their businesses.
Haleim Gendy, owner of Halstead Avenue Bistro, 123 Halstead Ave., said it's been brutally hot in the kitchen of his business but the air conditioning has been helping to draw customers. Gendy said more people have been coming to eat at his restaurant because they don't want to cook at home.
"We give our staff a lot of water to drink because we need them full of fluids so they don't dehydrate," Gendy said. "We've been opening the door in the kitchen to let some air in."
Still, Gendy said the kitchen has been as hot as 120 degrees.
Lisa Maire Giuliano, owner of Lisa Marie's Ice Shop, 164 Halsead Ave., said her business has been at its busiest since the heat wave hit Tuesday. Giuliano said as long as the air conditioning is on, the ice she sells won't melt.
"It's been pretty efficient," Giuliano said. "It is a lot of work though."
Tony Zegarelli, owner of Harrison Pizza and Pasta, 242 Halstead Ave., said it's been really hot by his pizza oven but he is making sure he and his staff are drinking a lot of water while they work.
"It's better than laying blacktop," Zegarellia said. "We're just trying our best to make our customers happy."
