How can you beat free? Italian ice. First day of spring? Yum.

Westlake High School students agreed, and were out en masse on Monday at the Rita's at 330 Saw Mill River Road, also known as Route 9A, in Elmsford.

Does anyone remember the Italian ices at Master's at the same shopping center? Now that will date you!

Rita’s celebrated the first day of spring -- and the chain's 25th anniversary- -  by giving away samples of its famed Italian ices.

The sales clerk in Elmsford said business had been insane on Monday. He did not get a break!

The freebie lasts until 9 p.m. Monday, so hurry. Guests receive an ice in a limited-edition First Day of Spring cup.

The limit is one per guest.

Visitors are being encouraged to snap a photo of the ice treat and to share it on Instagram and Twitter using #RitasFirstDayOfSpring to enter the photo contest.

Guests who use the hashtag from March 20 through March 25 will be entered in a contest for a chance to win 25 prizes. Three Grand Prize winners will get free Italian Ice from Rita’s for a year.

Rita's expects to give away more than 1 million cups of the cold stuff.

The winners will be announced on Rita’s social media channels on March 31.

Rita’s expects to give away more than 500,000 pounds of Italian ice -- which is heavier than the Statue of Liberty -- during the annual event, according to its website.

Its most popular flavor is mango, followed by cherry, Cotton Candy, SWEDISH FISH®, and lemon.

Rita’s says it uses more than 300,000 pounds of mangoes a year.
