Westchester Business Council Honors 'Rising Stars'

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Business Council of Westchester (BCW) honored its eighth class of “Rising Stars” with a ceremony Thursday night at the MasterCard headquarters in Purchase.

Steve Jones, chairperson of the board of the BCW, said that the awards honor 40 people under 40-years-old who are up and coming leaders in Westchester County. People from a wide assortment of businesses were nominated to be a “Rising Star” but only 40 made the cut. Jones said that the awards over the last eight years have exceeded expectations as far as how many people seek one out.

“This is an opportunity for young people that will continue to be helpful to our county,” Jones said. “It builds a network between the honorees and alumni and applies itself to numerous charitable opportunities in Westchester. The people being honored here tonight were selected for their vigor, thinking, energy and intellectualism.”

Director of Economic Development for Westchester County Laurence Gottlieb, a “Rising Star” alumnus (2004) himself, said that the honorees are the future of business in Westchester County adding that it’s wonderful that the award winners come from all across the business spectrum in the county.

“In part I took my current position because as a Rising Star I felt on some level a commitment to Westchester County,” Gottlieb said. “I left my employer at the time because I wanted to help the greater community.”

Jones said the folks honored at the event are all of high character and are showing potential at a young age. Jones said that the winners of the award are also receiving a call to public-mindedness that is greater than their career aspirations.

“There are many alumni who have gone on to take over leadership positions,” Jones said. “Over time we feel that they will not only effect positive change on the business community but the greater community of Westchester County.”

County Executive Rob Astorino was on hand to congratulate the winners. Astorino said that part of the purpose of the ceremony is to show people outside of Westchester that the county is the intellectual capital of New York.

“We have high quality residents that want to work,” Astorino said. “The future looks bright here.”
