Westchester Waits Til Last Minute To Do Holiday Shopping

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Sales, procrastination and just not having enough time topped the reasons holiday shoppers at the White Plains Galleria waited until Christmas Eve to do their shopping.

Mark Robles, an employee of Elegance Perfume at the White Plains Galleria, said many people were doing last-minute Christmas shopping Monday.

With presents less than 24 hours away from being ripped open, some shoppers hadn’t even purchased theirs yet. Natasha Brown, who was shopping with her husband and two kids Monday, said she always waits for the last minute because she doesn’t have time to do it any other day.

“We both work overnight and we are tired, and then we have to take care of our kids,” Brown said. “We try to get a little shopping done beforehand, but the last minute is the only convenient time for us. As long as our shopping gets done, I’m happy.”

Mark Robles, an employee at Elegance Perfumes in the Galleria, said the mall has been packed the last couple of days and that his store has been open longer to accommodate all the shoppers. Robles added that gift ideas can be hard to come by, which contributes to people waiting for the last minute to shop.

“Some people are picky, too,” Robles said. “The prices could be a problem with the way the economy is. We’re trying to offer great discounts and promotions for shoppers.”

Mitchell Clark needed to kill some time after dropping off a friend in White Plains. He also added that he didn’t have much choice but to shop last-minute.

Nick Spano said he waited so he could beat the crowds and take advantage of the sales.

“Some of it is still laziness and procrastination though,” he said.
