Connecticut is host to the largest National Trails Day celebration in the nation, with 259 events happening Saturday and Sunday throughout the state.

On Saturday, residents can join Norwalk River Valley Trail Steering Committee member Greg Waters for a moderate hike through Weir Farm National Historic Site and Ridgefield open space from 10 a.m. to noon.

During the hike, Waters will discuss New England land use history, plant identification and biological monitoring. The hike passes old fields, wetlands, mountain laurel groves and towering rocky ledges.

Pre-registration is required. Participants should meet at the National Park Service parking lot at 735 Nod Hill Road, Wilton. For questions or to register, call 203-834-1896 x28, or send an email to andrew_lowe@nps.gov.

On Sunday, residents will again have the chance to explore Weir Farm from 12:30 to 3 p.m. This hike, however, will remain in Wilton.

During this roughly half-mile journey, participants will visit Weir Pond, get a preview of buildings currently under renovation and have the opportunity to explore their artistic side. This walk is sponsored by the Trust for Public Land and will happen rain or shine.

Pre-registration is recommended. Walkers should meet at the Wilton train station, 7 Station Road, by 12:30 p.m. for a shuttle to the park. For questions or to register, contact June Sgobbo at 203-777-7367, or at June.Sgobbo@tpl.org.

Also on Sunday, Woodcock Nature Center and the Norwalk River Watershed Alliance are hosting a guided educational walk through the center’s trails from 2 to 4 p.m. The walk will include information about the area’s amphibians, aquatic life, wildflowers and invasive species. Participants are encouraged to bring cameras, field glasses, boots and questions.

Walkers are not required to pre-register for this event. Participants should meet walk leader Dave Havens at Woodcock Nature Center, 56 Deer Run Road. For questions or more information, including a rain plan, call the center at 203-762-7280 or via email at woodcocknaturecenter@yahoo.com.
