Easton Library Looks to Create Little Readers

EASTON, Conn. – While young people are becoming increasingly proficient with digital devices, Lynn Zaffino is making sure they learn at an early age about the power of reading.

“I believe the more you expose kids to books, the more likely it will be that they become avid readers later in life,” said Zaffino, children and young adult librarian at the Easton Public Library

One of the ways Zaffino is trying to teach children the importance of reading is through a twice weekly Preschool Story Time program. Every Tuesday and Thursday at 2:15 p.m., children from area preschools sit down with Zaffino and take a literary journey, followed by an arts and crafts project that complements the book.

During one recent sit-down, Zaffino read aloud from Lucy Cousins' popular series of children’s books about Maisy the Mouse. After the children had picked out their favorite colored mat to sit on, they gathered on the floor, surrounding Zaffino as she read.

Following the story, the children made mouse ears to wear in honor of the heroine Maisy. “We usually do a different arts and crafts theme after story time. The kids really enjoy it and it ties in well with the stories,” said Zaffino, who's been doing afternoon story times since November. “Although, I think some kids come just for the arts and crafts,” she joked.

“We really want children to see the library as a positive place. We want children to be lovers of books, learning and reading,” she said.

The Preschool Story Time is open to children 3 years old and older and all are welcome on a drop-in basis.  Anyone with questions about the program can contact Zaffino at 203-261-0134.
