Harrison Library Offering SAT/ACT Test Prep Exam

HARRISON, N.Y. – The Harrison Public Library receives help from the community’s young adults on a daily basis and they are now rewarding them by offering a free SAT/ACT practice test this weekend.

“They’re really good to us,” said young adult librarian Marilyn Horton of the teens. “They worked hard in the summer reading program – they gave a lot to us. They also do a computer tutor program for us where they help seniors learn how to use computers, so we want to offer something to them.”

The Kaplan Test Prep-sponsored event is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and combines both high school standardized exams to see which one the student performs better on.

“It’s free, so we hope that people will take advantage of it,” said Horton. Children’s librarian Bonnie Tjomstol then chimed in saying that it is good practice for the real thing and for those students who are nervous about taking the exams.

The test prep could lead students to “getting a better SAT or ACT score,” said Tjomstol before adding that “tutors are expensive.”

Harrison was contacted by Kaplan because “we’re the kind of community that would respond and be interested,” said Horton.

Advertising for the program ranges from the local papers and library website to flyers in the schools. In the end, Horton said it comes down to helping the teens because of what they have given to the library.  “We want to make them know that we’re aware of them and we want to provide things for them,” she said. “Anything we can do for them, we’d be happy to.”
