HARRISON, N.Y. Jewish women who "made a difference" will be the focus of a film festival kicking off next month at the Harrison Public Library.
The Hadassah Film Festival starts Oct. 15 and will feature four movies. They center on a journalist, actor, activist and six female comics.
Its a very original, unique kind of program, said librarian Carol Meehan. Weve already had a lot of interest just in patrons coming in and seeing the flyers theyre very curious about it. So I think its going to be successful.
Hadassah, the largest womens organization in the country, is committed to healthcare and humanitarian causes in the U.S., Israel, and around the world, said Phyllis Hartstein, president of the group's more than 7,000-member Westchester region. Hartstein said she was thrilled of the co-sponsorship with the Harrison Library.
The first series ran in the summer in Greenburgh, and we had an overwhelming response from the community, so were anticipating a very good turnout, she said. We love the fact that we can bring information, education, and entertainment to people in the community about really extraordinary women who made a difference, especially because they did it at a time when it was so much harder than it is for women today.
Libraries in Mt. Kisco, White Plains, Greenburgh, Scarsdale and Pound Ridge will also feature the films. The free screenings begin at 7 p.m. and conclude with a discussion. Monday, Oct. 15: "Ahead of Time" A documentary film celebrating the remarkable life of Ruth Gruber: journalist writer, witness, and participant in the making of 20th century history.
Monday, Oct. 22: "Yoo Hoo Mrs. Goldberg" The humorous and eye-opening story of the actor, writer, and broadcasting pioneer, Gertrude Berg.
Monday, Oct. 29: "Grace Paley: Collected Shorts" Lilly Rivlins intimate documentary is a rich, inspiring portrait of writer, activist, and New York icon Grace Paley.
Wednesday, Nov. 7: "Making Trouble" The true saga of six of the greatest female comic performers of the last century: Molly Picon, Fanny Brice, Sophie Tucker, Joan Rivers, Gilda Radner, and Wendy Wasserstein.
