Greenwich Schools To Receive Upgrades

GREENWICH, Conn. — Greenwich schools can look forward to improvements when doors open to students in the fall. Here is a list of capital projects underway:

• The district is beginning a wireless capability program. The first year Wi-Fi will be installed at Greenwich High School and in Library Media Centers of the middle schools.

• A district-wide asbestos abatement--asbestos is currently controlled at the schools--will be conducted in facilities' service tunnels as per state mandate.

• District-wide painting.

• District-wide fire alarm system upgrades will begin and ceiling tiles will be replaced.

• The district’s fleet department will have hybrid electric buses.

• District-wide school furniture replacement for students, teachers and cafeterias.

• All single pane windows at the International School at Dundee are being replaced with new double- pane insulated, solar screen energy efficient windows to provide heating and cooling savings.

• Greenwich High School—all carpeted floors will be replaced with tile floors to alleviate indoor air quality issues and make maintenance more efficient. Duct cleaning will occur as well.

• Central Middle School—stage curtains will be replaced and gym locker rooms will be refurbished and a fitness room will be created. Classroom lighting and corridors will be upgraded and hallway lockers will be replaced. In addition, unit ventilators in the sixth grade wing will be replaced to correct a humidity problem.    

• Western Middle School—the fitness room will be expanded into an adjoining storage closet. Replacement of blinds and curtains will begin. The electrical service in the M&W Wing will be upgraded to make way for upgraded technology and air conditioning. Duct cleaning will occur and HVAC equipment in the school’s west wing will be replaced to improve air distribution.

• Eastern Middle School—hallway lockers will be replaced.

• Cos Cob School—the school’s gym, which is used for summer school, will have air conditioning installed. 

• Riverside School—boilers and related distribution systems will be replaced.

• North Street School parking lots were supposed to be renovated and expanded, but the work will be postponed until summer 2012 due to land-use approval delays.
