BEDFORD, N.Y. -- Libby Whitman has heard the screeching tires, witnessed the near misses and experienced more than her fair share of excitement at her home on Bedford Center Road.
Now she wants the town to put a stop to it in the form of octagonal red sign. Whitman and her husband, Cutler, have sent a formal request to the Town of Bedford to replace the yield sign at the intersection of Bedford Center Road and Route 22 with a stop sign.
Weve never had an accident, Libby Whitman said. But we have had a lot of near misses.
Because her driveway is near the intersection, Whitman said it becomes difficult to exit because cars only pay attention to the left side of the road. Whitman, who has three children, also says the school bus company refuses to pick her children up in the morning because the intersection is too dangerous.
Whitman said shes tried to get the sign changed in the past, but the process had become to cumbersome because the Westchester County owned Bedford Center Road. She is hopeful that the changes will finally take place now that the town owns the road.
The town board read the Whitmans letter during Tuesdays school board meeting.
Town Supervisor Lee V. A. Roberts said shes already brought the matter up with Kevin Winn, the towns commissioner of public works, and William Hayes, the town police chief. Roberts said both men believe that a stop sign and modifications to the Whitmans driveway are necessary to increase safety near the intersection.
What were proposing is to set a public hearing on this on Sept. 6 at 7:30 p.m. ... hopefully this will help the situation for them somewhat, Roberts said.
