Greenburgh Swim Team Strokes to County Title

RYE, N.Y. – Tiny Jasmine Smith and a band of determined swimmers from the Greenburgh Swim Team made their two-day point lead stand up Thursday and splashed to a thrilling team victory in the Westchester County Swimming Championships at Rye Playland Pool.

Smith won three events, including the girls’ 10-and-under 50-butterfly on the meet’s final night, and the Green Machine, consisting of relays teams and individual swimmers, pushed Greenburgh to 217.5 overall points, surpassing second place Chappaqua with 202. Lake Isle, the six-time defending team champion, took third with 191.5 points.

“This is my third County meet, but this is the first time I’ve won events,” said Smith, who admitted that the butterfly was not her favorite strokes but raced home in 29.92 seconds. “It was kind of tough all week with the rain, but we wanted to do well as a team. I like all the events, but it was good to win this one to help the team.”

Led by a motivating coaching staff that included three coaches with their hair colored green, Greenburgh began the final day of swimming 30 points ahead of Lake Isle but earned enough points to hold off the surging Chappaqua team. The staff are all former Greenburgh swimmers and divers.

“We have a great staff and a beautifully diverse, wonderful group of kids,” Head coach Jackie Cordero said. “We are thrilled to have this team win for Greenburgh, and we want to thank all the parents and the community for their support this summer. We beat some very good teams.”

Coaches Greg Accarino and brother John Accarino joined Nathan Graves, Rachel Davis and Seth Wolin getting the Green Machine tuned for the County meet.

“We feel good about the lead and we think we have the team that can win,” Greg Accarino said before the final events began. “We’ll see that happens.”

What happened was a Westchester County Swimming Championship for Greenburgh, its first in more than a decade.
