BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. The winter indoor farmer's market will open for its fourth year in a new location-- Pace University's student café.
The student café, called Pace Perk, is located in the lower level of the dining hall at Pace University's Briarcliff Campus at 235 Elm Rd. The indoor farmer's market will open there beginning on Jan. 7, 2012.
From 2008 to 2011, the Briarcliff indoor farmer's market, run by the Ossining-based Community Markets organization, was housed in the Briarcliff Congregational Church at the corner of South State and Elm Roads. This year, the church had some issues with parking during snowy days, and Briarcliff village officials later said that the church did not have the proper permits to house a for-profit commercial business.
"While leaving the church's location disappoints us, we are also excited about being a part of the Pace student community," said Miriam Haas, the founder of Community Markets, in a press release.
Haas said there has been a growing interest in eating and supporting local agriculture within college communities. There will be ample parking located next to the Pace University market, Haas noted.
Joan Austin, moderator for the Briarcliff Congregational Church, said she is sorry to see the market move.
"Both parties are disappointed," she said. "We enjoyed having the market there."
Community Markets oversees 20 farmers markets in Westchester, Rockland County and New York City, including the Saturday market in Ossining and the Briarcliff indoor market.
In addition to its indoor Briarcliff location, Community Markets also runs an indoor market in Mamaroneck, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church at 168 West Boston Post Rd. Indoor markets are open from Jan. 7 to May 19.
