Darien Police Deny Targeting Occupy Organizer

DARIEN, Conn. – Darien Police deny claims by Occupy Darien organizer Margaret Rague that they have discriminated against her or targeted her.

Rague has been arrested twice in the last month, once for an incident where police said she was drunk in the middle of the street, and another when they said she was causing a disturbance at a restaurant. In both incidents, police said Rague was uncooperative with officers and refused to be fingerprinted.

Rague has called the charges false and accused the police of singling her out. In a post on the Occupy Darien Facebook page, she wrote: “No arrest by the Darien Police for 23 years, where I have peacefully resided in this town. I organize Occupy Darien and they arrest me twice.”

The post goes on to describe how she was allegedly mistreated by police during the second incident. She says that they shoved her and broke her glasses. She also uses the term “fascism” several times to describe the encounter.

Capt. Fred Komm said Monday that police were not targeting Rague.

“That is false. There is no linkage between the incidents. They were all mutually exclusive to one another,” he said. “We have a substantial amount of evidence to support both incidents where she was arrested.”

Rague wrote on Facebook that she is in the process of obtaining an attorney to sue the Darien Police.
