MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. Mount Vernon Mayor Ernie Davis announced a new program to enhance use of the city's parks.
With the "Throwback" park and playground program, Mount Vernon is aiming to get more use out of its parks. A press release by the city said that leading up to the 1990s, community leaders would organize activities in the parks which included outreach programs, but by the 1990s most of those programs were gone.
"Sometimes its better to bring back tried and true programming that worked and enhances the summer playground and park experience," Davis said. "Our playgrounds had a reputation for having creative things going on, and were bringing that back to our neighborhoods."
The program began July 16 and will run until Aug. 17. Participating parks include Purdy Park on South Ninth Avenue, the Howard Street Playground between Second and Third streets, and the Sophie J. Mee Playground on South Third Avenue, which have their programs from 10 to 11:30 a.m. weekdays.
A second session will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Old Seventh Avenue Playground between Second and Third streets, the Hartley Park Playground on Oakley Avenue, and the Fleetwood Playground at Fleetwood Avenue and Broad Street.
"Over the next five weeks activities will take place at six key parks throughout the city every Monday to Friday," said Recreation Commissioner Darren Morton. "Recreation staff and Youth Bureau employees will work as park and playground leaders, offering children and adults activities such as water games, arts and crafts, sports competitions, and other special activities."
