Rush Fans Get New Insight at Jacob Burns

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – After screening his film "Rush: Behind the Lighted Stage", Canadian director Sam Dunn took the stage at the Jacob Burns Film Center in front of a room packed with diehard Rush fans decked out in their memorabilia of the band.

"The tough thing about doing a movie about a band like Rush and taking questions like this about them is that there is always someone out there that knows more about Rush than you do," Dunn said.

The screening of "Rush: Behind the Lighted Stage" and the subsequent Q&A session afterwards is part the Jacob Burns Film Center's "Sounds of Summer" film festival. The series of films include music documentaries and rare live performances where fans can get an insight after the film by speaking with the directors or historians of the musicians.

The classic metal band Rush is one of the most successful bands throughout generations, yet always maintained to be kept out of the mainstream spotlight. Despite this, they carry one of the largest cult followings with a hardcore fan base.

Dunn, who also notably directed the documentary "Metal: A Headbangers Journey", spoke of the difficulty that he encountered while directing a movie about a band such as Rush that has been around since the 1960's.

"With Rush, they've been around for so long that it was very difficult to make a movie without just turning it into a big list," Dunn said.

Fans in the audience praised Dunn for his work, especially in regards to rare, never before seen footage in the movie.

The Sounds of Summer festival will continue at the Jacob Burns Film Center until August 29 and highlights musicians such as The Beatles, Bob Dylan and Pink Floyd among others.

This Wednesday, the film center will show "The Other Side of the Mirror: Bob Dylan Live at the Newport Folk Festival". The film will be followed by a Q&A session with author/historian Sean Wilentz who has written extensively over the years on Dylan.
