Town Board Inacts Reforms In Ramapo

RAMAPO, N.Y. -- Before a packed chamber of irate residents, Ramapo Town Board members enacted a number of reforms to try and move forward following the federal fraud conviction Friday of former Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence, according to lohud.com.

The decisions, which range from hiring 10 new police officers to setting a public hearing on freezing new modular schools for six months and eliminating the supervisor's control over town finances, also included a vote to establish a committee to abolish the Rockland Local Development Corp., said lohud.com.

One thing the board didn't do was name a replacement for St. Lawrence, although a former legislator, Bruce Levine, volunteer to serve until the November election.

Currently, the town is being overseen by Deputy Supervisor Yitzchok Ullman, but some legislators and residents are calling for another councilmember to be named including Rockland County Legislator Charles Falciglia.

“Now is the time for Acting Ramapo Supervisor Yitzy Ullman and Councilman Patrick Withers to immediately show they are serious about changing the culture and fortunes of the Town of Ramapo by cutting all ties to the past," Falciglia said. "While Mr. Ullman's press release was positive, those who aided and abetted the failed St. Lawrence regime - Mona Montal, Michael Klein, and Nat Oberman - need to be terminated."

He went on to add that most importantly was to name an interim councilman and pointed to Bill Weber as the replacement.
