SUNY Purchase Displays Sculptures in White Plains

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Five members of the SUNY Purchase community are featured in this month’s ArtsWestchester Exhibition in White Plains called “Sculpture: On and Off the Wall.”

“Sculpture is a process of exploration where I encounter gradual moments of realization and discovery,” 2011 Purchase graduate Malcolm MacDougall III said in a press release.

MacDougall III graduated from the college’s School of Art and Design and has had his sculptures displayed across New York State. Class of 2009 graduate Craig Usher will also have his work displayed at the gallery. For the show, Usher created a piece called “Figure in Transformation.” The piece is a standing human made of clay that separates each body part through a web of metal rods.

“Sculpture is a kind of vessel reflecting the self which continues to communicate information beyond the work of the maker,” Usher said in a press release. “The idea of transcendence is powerful inspiration. One can move beyond one’s self to connect with others.”

It isn’t just students whose work is on display at the ArtsWestchester Gallery. Assistant professor Nancy Bowen has two untitled pieces in the show that refer to Mount Mehru, a sacred spot of creation and destruction for Hindus and Buddhists. Sculptor on staff Eric Wildrick is displaying a piece called “Sixty-Four Hands” while Purchase alumnus and assistant professor Christopher Kaczmarek has an untitled piece on display.

The exhibit is currently on display at the ArtsWestchester Gallery located at 31 Mamaroneck Ave. in White Plains until May 20. The gallery is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. For more information call 914-428-4220.
