SUNY Purchase Hosting Dance Concert

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The SUNY Purchase Dance Company is preparing to perform four pieces from four distinguished artists at a dance concert to be held the last weekend in April.

During the show students will perform dance works from four separate choreographers. One of the choreographers whose work will be performed is Lar Lubovitch, most famous for the hit Broadway musical “Into the Woods.” Students will perform Lubovitch’s “Dvorak Serenade,” a piece written in 2007 by a man who the New York Times called “one of the best 10 choreographers in the world.”

The students will also perform “Lareigne,” a piece written in 1995 by New York City based choreographer Stephen Petronio as well as “Polka” by Mark Morris, a dance where performers form a circle while stomping to the music and throwing their hands in the air. The Saturday Matinee in San Francisco called the piece “a delightful romp.”

The final piece is “Prayers” by Jessica Lang set to excerpts from 18th Century Italian composer Giovanni Battista Pegolesi’s “Stabat Mater.” According to a review in the New York Times , the dance sets nine women in groups around a circle of wooden chairs calling it “artfully crafted” and “emotionally engaging.”

“Nowhere else can you see works by Lar Lubovitch, Stephen Petronio, Mark Morris and Jessica Lang on the same program,” said Wallie Wolfgruber, artistic director of the Purchase Dance Company in a press release. “Our students are of professional caliber and are doing an outstanding job performing these works.”

The first show will be held on Friday, April 27 at 8 p.m. with the second show on Saturday, April 28 at the same time. The performance concludes on Sunday, April 29 at 2 p.m. All performances will be held in at the Performing Arts Center. For more information call (914) 251-6200 or visit www.purchase.edu .
