Thousands Celebrate Harrison And Columbus Day

HARRISON N.Y. – Thousands of people celebrated their town and the famous Italian explorer Monday during the 35th annual Great To Live In Harrison Day/Columbus Day festival.

County officials, organizations from throughout Westchester and Harrison students, police and fire officials marched in the event's main attraction down Halstead Avenue to the front of Town Hall.

Organizations sold items for charity at an afternoon festival, while residents mingled and ate food while viewing several performances. Long-time Harrison resident Nick Galasso was honored as Citizen of the Year on the main stage.

Residents were also treated to fireworks and a concert over the course of the three day event.

Harrison Recreation Department Supervisor Gerry Salvo said the event gives people a sense of community.

“It brings the people together,” he said.

Harrison resident Katy Behrman came to see the parade for the second consecutive year with husband Mike and children Teddy and George.

“I like all the marching bands," she said.
