The discussion, an initiative of the Bedford-based Westchester Land Trust, will focus on what steps parks, both regionally and nationally, have taken to address sustainability in open spaces. Admission is free.

Many parks and open spaces are increasingly looking at how they can advance their missions through sustainable operations on their lands. These can include, but are not limited to, alternative energy projects, waste reduction initiatives and pollution prevention projects.

By many accounts, parks and open spaces are leaders in sustainability, yet many of these projects remain secondary attractions to the natural resources that we seek out when visiting these locations.

Speakers for the program include:

  • Alyssa Cobb, the assistant commissioner for parklands and planning for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, who will discuss sustainable initiatives in New York City parks.
  • Anne Jaffee-Holmes, director of conservation and sustainability education at the Greenburgh Nature Center, who will highlight green actions taken at Greenburgh Nature Center.
  • Ron Schulhof and Michelle Sterling of the Scarsdale Forum Sustainability Committee, who will present on the development of an "eco-comfort station" facility on the Scarsdale Middle School campus serving the school fields and tennis courts.

A panel discussion with a question-and-answer session will follow the formal presentations. The Greenburgh Public Library is at 300 Tarrytown Road, Elmsford. Participants should register at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/greening-our-parks-conservation-cafe-tickets-16870981560.
