What's Happening in Harrison This Week

HARRISON, N.Y. -- Meetings of the town/village board and board of education, a movie shoot and several concerts highlight what's going on in Harrison this week. 

Monday, May 14

Feature Film Shoot: The movie “Admission” will begin filming on the campus of Manhattanville College. “Admission” follows Portia Nathan who is overly dedicated to her job as an admissions officer at an Ivy League school. A talented but rough-around-the-edge 17-year-old who might not be "Ivy League material" forces her to confront her own past and leads her into a career endangering fight with university admissions. Preschool Art Class: 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. Kids ages 3-5 will create open-ended art projects using a variety of materials. The class will be held at the Sollazzo Center every Monday through June 18. The fee is $75. Checks can be made payable to Doreen Grozinger, 270 Harrison Ave., Harrison.

Kindergarten Parent Orientation: 9:30 a.m. Parents of children in next year's kindergarten class will visit the school to learn more about it, 480 Harrison Ave., Harrison.

Draw, Paint, Sculpt: 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Kids in grades 1-3 will learn the basics of painting, drawing and 3-D. The class will be held at the Sollazzo Center every Monday through June 18. The fee is $75. Checks can be made payable to Doreen Groziner, 270 Harrison Ave., Harrison.

Reflection - Community, Civility and Compassion Series: 7:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. The first event in the Community, Civility and Compassion series of panel discussions. The panel will be entitled "Reflection," hosted by Rabbi Barry Kenter, the rabbi of the Greenburgh Hebrew Center of Dobbs Ferry, funded by a grant from the Fetzer Institute to the American Library Association. Each event is open to adults and students in the community and will include a guest speaker, screening or activity covering topics involving race, inclusion and community understanding. The goal is to bring the community together through an open dialogue about difficult issues, 2 Bruce Ave., Harrison.

Tuesday, May 15

Kindergarten Show: 9:30 a.m. Kindergarten students at Parsons Memorial School will perform a show for their parents, 200 Halstead Ave., Harrison. 

Wednesday, May 16

Kindergarten Show Assembly: 9:30 a.m. Kindergarten students at Parsons Memorial School will perform a show for their peers, 200 Halstead Ave., Harrison.

18th Annual Senior Project Procession and Party: 4 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. The liberal arts and sciences, conservatory of theatre art, and arts management faculty invite the campus community of Purchase College to line the route and cheer as seniors in those programs march and present their completed senior projects to the Library. Faculty and staff will gather at the Library at 4:15 pm to greet the seniors., 735 Anderson Hill Road, Purchase.

Meditation with Dr. Vidich: 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Dr. Andrew Vidich an author, educator, international speaker, and editor of more than five books will be at the Harrison Public Library. He will offer a practical technique of meditation that can positively impact your life. Through first hand demonstrations of this simple yet highly effective method you will discover the key to deeper concentration, relaxation and profound personal growth, 2 Bruce Ave., Harrison

BOE Meeting: 8:15 p.m. The Harrison Board of Education will meet in the library of Louis M. Klein Middle School, 50 Union Ave., Harrison. 

Thursday, May 17

Instrumental Concert: 9:30 a.m. & 7:30 p.m. Harrison Avenue School students will put on an instrumental concert, 480 Harrison Ave., Harrison.

Dawny Dew Children's Music/Puppets/Dance: 10 a.m. - 10:20 a.m. Wiggle and giggle and pretend to be wild and wonderful animals at the Harrison Public Library. For children ages 6 and under. Siblings welcome, 2 Bruce Ave., Harrison.

Fine Art Class: 3:30 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. A fine art class is being offered to kids in grades 3-5 at the Sollazzo Center. The program runs through June 14. The fee is $75. Checks can be made payable to Doreen Grozinger, 270 Harrison Ave., Harrison.

Town/Village Board Meeting: 7:30 p.m. The Harrison Town/Village Board will meet at the Municipal Building, 1 Heineman Place, Harrison. 

Friday, May 18

Purchase College Commencement: 12:30 p.m. - 4 p.m. Purchase College will hold its 40th Annual Commencement Ceremoney at the Westchester County Center in White Plains. Contact commencement@purchase.edu for more information about this event, 198 Central Ave., White Plains.

DARE Graduation: 4:30 p.m. The annual DARE graduation will take place in the auditorium of Louis M. Klein Middle School, 50 Union Ave., Harrison.
