WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- White Plains officially welcomed the Cambria Hotel & Suites to its downtown Wednesday with a grand opening celebration.
The ceremonies at 250 Main St., within sight of White Plains City Hall and Walmart, included a brass band, ribbon-cutting and beer tasting competition featuring local craft breweries.
White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach declared the tastiest beer to be Bronx IPA, to the winner to the scorn of those favoring Captain Lawrence or Yonkers Brewery brands.
Parent company Choice Hotels International, Inc., one of the world’s largest hotel companies, featured a variety of "culinary creations" and offered tours of the new Cambria Hotel, the 22nd to open in the United States. Two more Cambria openings are planned early next year in Chelsea and Times Square.
Michael Murphy, senior vice president for Cambria, said he was proud to open the newest hotel with 130 suites in Westchester County, also home to such major corporations as MasterCard, PepsiCo and Heineken.
While Murphy has overseen the opening of more than 100 hotels in 31 years, he said, "This one puts on the global footprint for Cambria."
Murphy said his favorite part of an opening is watching the faces of hotel visitors as they walk in for the first time.
Roach, who grew up nearby, noted the hotel is on the site of a formerly rundown A&P Supermarket, left abandoned for many years. "The world is shifting back to cities,'' Roach said. The new development includes 35,000-square-feet of retail space.
Steve Joyce, president and CEO of Choice Hotels, said, "I am more than thrilled to be here and become a neighbor in your great town. This is the new age of hotels."
The Cambria bills itself as contemporary, upscale lodging at affordable prices. This week in White Plains, rooms started at $139 a night. Cambria's suites are about 25 percent larger than standard hotel rooms, offering separate areas to sleep and work. For details, go to www.cambriasuites.com.
