The Second Annual Pancreatic Cancer Symposium will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Gilda's Club, 80 Maple Ave. in White Plains. The symposium is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided.

Dr. Joshua Raff, chief of the Oncology and Hematology section at White Plains Hospital and director of the Digestive Cancer Program; along with Dr. Charles Noyer, chief of Gastroenterology; and Dr Yael Zack of Oncology & Hematology of the White Plains Physician Association, will discuss pancreatic cancer and the latest methods for preventing, diagnosing and treating the disease.

Pancreatic cancer remains one of the deadliest cancers with a five-year survival rate of 6 percent. Though new research is still in the clinical and developmental stages, chemotherapy combinations, targeted therapies, and genetic testing could offer effective treatments for patients with the diagnoses.

"We know that pancreatic cancer has a low survival rate, so that means we have to detect it early and start with treatment as soon as possible for the best chance of a good outcome," said Raff. "Programs such as our symposium help make the community aware of pancreatic cancer so they know about the signs and symptoms of the disease."

In March 2014 White Plains Hospital opened its Pancreatic Cancer Early Detection Program, a clinical trial using modern screening techniques for individuals at elevated risk. It is one of only a few such programs in the country.
