“My dad does the Westchester Triathlon every year, so it was cool for me to literally follow in his footsteps -- well not quite the same distance!” says Cronin. His race involves a 150-yard swim, 4-mile bike and 1 mile run for 11-14 year olds. A less intensive course is held for younger racers. Cronin's dad, Norbert, will once again compete in the 34th annual Westchester Triathlon, in hopes of completing the Olympic distance race comprising a .9 mile swim, 25-mile bike ride and 6.2-mile run.
Older than 14 but a newcomer to triathlons? The Westchester Super Sprint could be for you.
When Alex Davitt of Rye, completed the 2011 Westchester Super Sprint, she never dreamed it would lead her to begin competing in Sprint, Olympic and Half Ironman distance races. “The Super Sprint is designed to attract people who are new to triathlons and who want to get a sense of what the sport is all about,” says Phil Gormley, chairman of the 2016 Westchester Triathlon Committee. “It’s a fun, safe way to involve newcomers who want to live a healthier life and is a fantastic goal for a family to work together to achieve.”
Scheduled for Saturday, September 24 for participants 15 years and older, the Super Sprint involves a 300-yard swim, 6-mile bike ride, and 1-mile run. On average, the course can be completed in less than two hours. Participants in all races must supply their own equipment, including a bicycle and mandatory helmet.
Registration is open for all races of the Westchester Triathlon. Event details can be found on Westchester Triathlon's website.
