The owner of Beacon-based Denise Gianna Designs did a majority of the work on her modernist home eight years ago with the help of Fishkill-based Nurzia Construction Corporation -- with the builder winning an award for the effort.
Gianna has been designing since 2009 but just recently moved her office out of her Beacon home and onto Main Street. She said her shop is a studio for client work and meetings and also stocks home design fabrics, upcycled, custom furniture by various artists including Hudson Gold, and recycled fabric pillows and household goods both ready-made and custom.
The former jewelry designer, mural and faux finishes painter who also teaches in the Interior Design Program at Purchase College in Purchase, said design and decoration services are really hot now. She says she accommodates clients by offering her services mostly on an hourly basis to accommodate budget constraints.
Gianna also offers a wide range of options and services. "My clients have access to our craftspeople for sewing, upholstery, architectural and floor planing, handy-person services, small job painting, picture wall design and installation, window treatment design and installation and faux and decorative painting," she said. "We can also assist with cabinetry design through a number of building and cabinetry professionals we happily recommend."
Most popular this time of year is room renovation and redecoration. "People need a change after the holidays and home-bound winters leave us all craving change," she said.
Gianna particularity enjoys projects using most, if not all, of what a client already has. "It's so challenging and fun to upcycle and transform," she said.
And she's looking forward to spring and summer when she said full room design, including kitchens and baths, tend to be most popular.
Some of her tried and true design tips include:
- Keep what you love and ditch what you don't.
- If you love it, it's worth up-cycling or reupholstering. However, spend your money on a professional to help you save costly mistakes.
- You can't buy space. Filling up every bit of space is can be trying, stressful and overbearing. Space gives you room to breathe.
- Paint may be the simplest and cheapest way to update or improve your space, but unless you're super confident with color, enlist professional help choosing.
