The latest outdoor craze, according to some bicycling enthusiasts, are "fat bikes,'' that are more stable and safer to ride on trails in snowy and slushy conditions.
Sara Villalobos of My City Bikes brought the newest wheels to the attention of Daily Voice, just in time for winter break.
"In the wake of Winter Storm Jonas, there's a silver lining in all that snow -- fat biking," Villalobos said.
A new kind of bicycle called "fat bikes" has transformed cycling into a winter sport. Being inches -- or even feet -- deep in snow doesn't have to keep people inside, she said.
Locally a bike shop called Ride of Pleasantville at 351 Manville Road in Pleasantville sells "fat bikes."

Ride of Pleasantville is a great place for people to try one out, Villalobos said.
These are not the "fat tire" Husky-brand bikes of the 1970s, and they are not inexpensive. There is a range on the cost of fat bikes depending on the bike's materials and construction, typically starting at around $500 on the low end.
If a new fat bike isn't in the budget, seasonal tires are a more affordable way to adapt a traditional mountain bike for snowy conditions.
For entry-level riders, bike paths are a great place to enjoy winter biking after a snowfall. The My City Bikes Westchester County app has a guide to beginner-level bike paths that are a good starting point.
