Mamaroneck Welcomes Fast, Casual, Eco-Friendly Mexican Food

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – A Larchmont family used utensils made of plant starch to eat fast, causal Mexican food prepared with 100-percent canola oil and authentic spices at Salsa Fresca, which cut the ribbon on its Mamaroneck store Saturday.

Robyn and Josh Salles and their two young children, of Larchmont, said they liked the restaurant because it gives Mamaroneck a fresh and environmentally-friendly alternative.

“Everybody likes a healthy option,” Robyn said, as she sat down to lunch with her husband, Josh, and 7- and 3-year-old daughters.

Marc Miles, one of the four owners of Salsa Fresca, said that they are trying to do their part to reduce their carbon foot print.

“And a lot of our customers love that, and they feel comfortable coming in here and that they are doing their part as well,” he said.

Salsa Fresca, which also has locations in Yorktown and Bedford Hills, offers six-or-seven signature dishes, but also lets customers build their own burrito, quesadilla, taco, nachos or salad,  Miles said.

“Everything is prepared on site. Nothing is frozen,” he said. “We have a commitment to our food. We have a commitment to our environment. And those are our two big focuses.”

Saturday, John Broccoli of Dobbs Ferry ordered a bowl of three meats, black beans, onions and hot sauce, which he usually goes to the Bedford Hills location to get. He said he is happy to now have one closer to him, adding that it fills a void in the area.

“We’re really happy to be in the village of Mamaroneck. We know it’s a great spot to be. And there was a void here. We knew that it would be great to fill this void,” Miles said.

After the ribbon-cutting, Village of Mamaroneck Mayor Norman Rosenblum picked three names at random for the stores grand-opening promotion. The winners will receive free burritos for one year, and are allowed to get one burrito per week.

“Salsa Fresca is typical of the continuation of the village of Mamaroneck being the No. 1 destination in Westchester County,” he said. “There are no such things as an empty store in Mamaroneck. Someone takes it over right away.”

Rosenblum cited Half-Time, an independent beer distributor, which came to the village last year, and the new stores and condos going up across from the Regatta further down Mamaroneck Avenue.
