RYE BROOK, N.Y. -- The Wine Cellar in Rye Brook hosted local leaders and wine aficionados for a tasting on Thursday, Jan. 17, as part of its month-long celebration of wines from New York.
"New York has become one of the most important wine-producing regions in the United States," said Matthew Booker, president and general manager of The Wine Cellar Group. "We like to support our local producers, so we've put together a nice range from all regions in New York."
He said that Gov. Andrew Cuomo has given a lot of support to the wine industry in New York, which is home to a number of unique, boutique-style vineyards. The region is good for cold-climate type grapes. He said that about two-thirds of the New York products that The Wine Cellar sells are sold to out-of-state customers. "People are really starting to discover it. And wine is all about discovery."
"The industry has come a long way in New York," said Eric Rosenbaum, the cellar manager for the Rye Brook Wine Cellar. He said that the wine industry really started to grow about 30 years ago, and that the products have really improved over that time. "As the vines get older, the techniques get more polished and they are able to produce a better product."
The Rye Brook location opened up in the Rye Ridge Shopping Center in September. Rosenbaum said that the store offers wine products from some of the top producers in the world, as well as smaller, select producers. Rosenbaum said that the goal is to help people discover new wines at a good value.
"I like to guide people through their discovery. And we're not afraid to let people open up a bottle and try it," he said.
The store will be highlighting New York wines throughout the month. Booker said that the store will also begin hosting regular tastings with different themes, and the company partners with wine clubs to help people discover new products.
