Ex-Retailer Brings Service Expertise to New Rochelle Valvoline

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — Before starting as service center manager for Valvoline Instant Oil Change three years ago, Anthony Chavis had held similar positions at Duane Reade and Lowe's. So how does running a car service center compare to running a retail store?

“The customer service value is the same," said Chavis, a Mount Vernon resident. "You have to greet everyone with a smile and satisfy each customer. But the actual hands-on stuff is different."

Chavis started at Valvoline in 2009 as a manager-in-training. He applied for the job back then because fixing cars was something he had never done but always wanted to do. After more than two years in New Rochelle, Chavis said he has learned how to perform the different car maintenance services offered at Valvoline, such as tire rotations, transmission fuel replacements and oil changes.

“When I came in, I didn’t know anything about cars, and I was able to learn all of that here,” he said.

Chavis offers people advice on maintaining their vehicles, which he said brings many back as routine customers.

“I always remind people to get their oil changed every 3,000 miles," he said.

Chavis said if everyone were to follow that advice and take care of their cars, it would prevent problems in the future and they would last longer.

Visit Valvoline this Friday, June 15 to get 50 percent off oil changes for all of your vehicles.  Valvoline Instant Oil Change is located at at 39 Huguenot St. in New Rochelle.
