Groundwork Hudson Valley opened its newly expanded farmers market Saturday in Van der Donck Park, joining the St. John’s Church Farmers' Market and the recently announced Ridge Hill Farmers' Market as the third market set to run in Yonkers this summer.

Groundwork Hudson Valley’s downtown market, formerly located at the nearby Philipse Manor Hall, will be open every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through October 26.

Featuring produce grown within 100 miles of the city, the market will also host lectures and food tastings. Organizers say it will also create vocational training and jobs for city youth.

“This isn’t simply your run-of-the-mill farmers market,” Curt Collier, Deputy Director of Groundwork Hudson Valley, said in a statement. Collier said the Van der Donck Park market, part of Groundwork’s substantial Get Fresh Yonkers initiative, is designed to create a food co-op in collaboration with area farms, local schools, and downtown businesses.

In addition to the fresh food shopping, Groundwork will also offer culinary training in a professional kitchen and help foster partnerships between local restaurants and farms, increasing their access to seasonal, locally-grown produce.

Yonkers residents will also have a space to grow vegetables, which can be sold at the market, with the inclusion of the Citizen Farmer initiative.

“By uniting the community together with local farms and training our youth to run the market, our goal is to create deeper connections between local residents and fresh-picked foods that can last into the future,” Collier said.
