Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced September is Preparedness Month across New York.
Individuals, families, and businesses are encouraged to take this time to review their disaster plans to ensure preparedness for man-made or natural adversities. This is an important measure and can be instrumental in protecting families and loved ones.
New York has a website (www.nyprepare.gov) to guide citizens in preparation for any type of incident.
The Preparedness Month initiative is sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency in partnership with the Citizen Corps.
New Yorkers also may subscribe to NY-ALERT, the state’s alert and notification system, and download its new mobile app, iAlertz. To subscribe, visit www.nyalert.gov or www.ialertz.com. Staying informed is critical and I encourage all residents to take advantage of this new notification system.
Please be advised that curbside leaf collection goes into effect Oct. 19. Until then, do not place loose leaves at the curb. Leaves must continue to be placed curbside in brown bags for pickup.
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Harrison resident Matt Rube, an expert rock climber, who represented the United States at the Youth World Championships in Arco, Italy, in September. Specifically, he competed in the speed climbing event. In competition with youth from 51 countries across the globe, he placed 22nd. Rube had qualified for the championships by taking sixth place at the U.S. National Championships in Atlanta this past July.
Harrison Library patrons had the recent pleasure of listening to Edythe Ann Quinn, professor of history at Hartwick College and the author of the recently published book, "Freedom Journey." Quinn spoke about The Hills community in Westchester County and the sacrifices the community’s young men made as Civil War soldiers with the United States Colored Troops.
This year’s Harrison Educational Foundation fundraiser will be take place Monday. The golf outing and dinner reception will be at Century Country Club. Proceeds will be used to support curriculum enrichment programs at all six Harrison schools. Visit http://harrisoned.org/golf/ for more information.
