Harrison’s summer concert series got off to a great start on July 4. Mark your calendars for the return of Club Dennis and The Dennis “Dion” Nardone Show on July 22 in downtown Harrison. The concert event begins promptly at 6:30 p.m. and will include a magic act and balloon sculptures. I encourage everyone to join in this fun, family-friendly event.
Councilman Fred Sciliano is continuing to work closely with all parties involved in the Harrison Library renovation. Currently, the telephone system, data networking services and security systems are almost complete. Library furniture is being delivered and installed. Next week, exterior work will begin with the installation of brick pavers and landscaping elements. I’m happy to report that the new library is still on schedule for an early September grand opening.
Please take note of the following message from our library director, Galina Chernykh: "The Harrison Public Library has a strong commitment to the local community. Not only does the library house a collection of books covering local history, but it has assumed a role in research, preservation and the teaching of local history. When the Richard E. Halperin Memorial Library Building closed for renovations in September 2014, the Harrison Library took the opportunity to expand the institution's role in presenting local history in a most unique way. A partnership was formed between the Charles Dawson History Center and the Harrison Public Library and financially supported by the town of Harrison to research two subjects of local historical importance.
"The first project explored the history of the Hills, one of the earliest African- American communities in New York. The second project recounts the history of the Parsons School, founded by J.E. Parsons.
"These two collections became the framework for Harrison Remembers, a website that displays digital collections on historical topics relevant to the Town of Harrison. Due to the past several harsh winters, I have been investigating road repair options. Through no one’s fault, the economy in 2008 through 2012 prevented the town from doing any major rehabilitation of our roadways. Since that time, town personnel have been playing catch-up on infrastructure maintenance. We are currently utilizing in-house options to begin restoration projects.
In order to efficiently utilize the funding that is allocated for road projects, the town contracted with a consultant to prepare a Pavement Management Report. That report analyzed all roads in the town and ranked them according to an established, accepted standard called the Pavement Condition Index. The report then made recommendations, prioritizing the roadways to repair, based on the PCI, type of repair needed, cost of the repair, how heavily traveled the roads were and other factors.
Heavily traveled arterial roadways were given high priority for repair. They also required the allocation of a significant amount of the available funding. Less frequently traveled roads will receive large-scale road patching. This will be more than simple pothole repair and should provide significant improvements until we are able to address the entire neighborhood, as funding becomes available, and in accordance with the recommendations of the Pavement Management Report.
