Harrison Navy Veteran, John Kanka Dies at 80

HARRISON, N.Y. - John F. "Jack" Kanka, of Harrison, died Dec. 26 at the age of 80.

Born May 13, 1931 in Denver, Colo., he was the son of the late Leroy Anton and Esther Molly Eitel Kanka. He served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict and attended Long Beach City College, earning an associate's degree in arts in 1961.

Kanka enjoyed fishing, spending hours at Mamaroneck Harbor with his wife of 62 years, Ann. A devoted friend, husband and father, others were said to take an instant liking to him.

He is survived by his wife, the former Ann Olympico of Harrison, his sons Gary (Suzanne) Kanka of Stormville, N.Y. and his sister Shirley Fenner of Garden City, Kan. Kanka was predeceased by his brother Bill.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursday at Coxe & Graziano Funeral Home in Mamaroneck, where services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. Entombment will follow at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale.
