Many in Harrison say their Facebook feeds have been inundated by friends and family completing the Ice Bucket Challenge.
In chain letter fashion, when someone gets challenged they must pour a bucket of ice water over their head and/or donate $100 to ALS within 24 hours. When that person completes the challenge, they then challenge a few more people to keep the fundraising effort going.
“I think that’s great. Anything to raise money is a good thing,” said Harrison resident Stacey Shires, who walked her dog Mrs. Monkey MooMoo Shires down Halstead Avenue Wednesday.
Bajramoski was challenged by a friend on Facebook and plans to complete it Wednesday afternoon.
“I’m going to do it,” he said. “It’s pretty easy, too, people do it and donate also. It’s fun.”
Harrison Children Center employee Angela Vaccaro said both of her children, Brandon, 22, and Jenna, 18, have completed the challenge.
On the other hand, Jossie Marsico of Harrison doesn’t like the idea of posting any video on Facebook. She said she has been challenged and plans to donate to ALS.
“If they’re really donating then I think it’s worth the effort,” she said.
Hassain Ahmed said only one of his friends who have taken the challenge have actually donated.
However, everyone is getting into the spirit of the challenge, including celebrities like Ethel Kennedy, Justin Timberlake, The Roots and more.
The $4 million in donations between July 29 and Aug. 12 outpaced the same time period last year by $2.88 million. The ALS said on its website that there have been 70,000 new donors since July 29.
"We have never seen anything like this in the history of the disease,” said Barbara Newhouse, president and CEO of The ALS Association. “We couldn’t be more thrilled with the level of compassion, generosity and sense of humor that people are exhibiting as they take part in this impactful viral initiative."
