Harrison T-Shirt Sale Aims to Combat Breast Cancer

HARRISON, N.Y. – Resident Erica Prestwood is selling T-shirts to raise awareness and funds to combat breast cancer. The sale culminates in an annual breast cancer walk at Manhattanville College in October.

Prestwood, whose mother is a breast cancer survivor, created the website iheartboobs.org shortly after her mother was cured to help others who may be going through a similar situation she went through.

The website helps raise money to support the Westchester County team of the American Cancer Society known as “Muffin’s Crew.” The name comes from Margaret "Muffin" Gleason-Hamm who passed away from breast cancer in August 2009.  She is another reason the website was created.

“We need to make people aware that they should get a mammogram every year,” Prestwood said. “It’s very important. Breast cancer runs in my family. That’s why I started doing this.”

Prestwood said that her mother was only 41 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Now in her early 30s, Prestwood noted that it’s more real to her now than ever before.

“It’s better to be safe even if breast cancer doesn’t run in your family,” she said about getting checked for breast cancer. It’s important to get it done. My mother did and because of it I still have her in my life.”

The T-shirts are available in unisex sizes. Thermal long sleeve t-shirts and tank tops are also available. For every T-shirt sold, $5 will be donated to the American Cancer Society. For more information visit the group’s website.
