HARRISON, N.Y. --  Harrison High School junior James Murabito is working to create a new skate park in town.

Murabito is part of the International Baccalaureate Program and is required to complete an extracurricular project. He thought that a good way to improve the Harrison community would be to establish a skate park.

"There are a lot of places in town for kids to partake in sports such as baseball, soccer, basketball," Murabito said when presenting his idea to the Town Board at its last meeting. "There are not a lot of places for kids to participate in skateboarding, in-line skating or biking, so I'd like to bring a skate part to the town."

Murabito worked with Harrison Superintendent of Recreation Gerry Salvo and decided a good spot for the skate park would be the old pool at Passidomo Park in West Harrison. The pool has been unused for about five years. The skate park would be fenced in so that kids could not use it after hours or unsupervised.

Creating the park would cost $25,000 to $50,000, Murabito said. He is not requesting any funds from the town and plans to start a grassroots fundraising campaign.

"I plan to go around to big corporations and tell them what I'm doing," he said. "I plan to start out small, get something down and then add on to it as time goes on."

Mayor Ron Belmont said the idea is "absolutely wonderful."

Anyone wishing to contact Murabito about donations can reach him at motoxkid1896@aol.com or through the town's Recreation Department .
