Harrison Teens Step Up To Urge Kids To Read

HARRISON, N.Y. – Teen volunteers will urge Harrison children to "Dream Big" this summer at the Harrison Public Library. That's the theme for the library's annual summer reading game, which begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 7, and runs for four weeks.

Young Adult Librarian Marilyn Horton said the program, for children 12 and younger, will be run by both middle school and high school-aged students who volunteer their time and talent. Children will meet in the library's community room with the volunteers to discuss what they have read over the summer.

Horton, who is in charge of the volunteers, said she thinks it is "fantastic" that they are spending some of their free time over the summer to help out at the library.

“They are very excited to decorate and help encourage the kids to read,” Horton said. “They are caring and happy to share their creativity and are eager to help.”

Rose Marie, a 14-year-old volunteer, said she is volunteering because she likes to hear what children’s interests are.

“They get excited over the slightest topics,” Rose Marie said. “I’m not here for personal gain, but to get out of my house and benefit people.”

“I mostly want to volunteer because I love working with kids and love reading,” said Claudia, a 15-year old volunteer. “This is a nice fit and will give me something to do that is also really fun.”
