Jacob's Cure Raises Over $1 Million in 2010

HARRISON, N.Y. - Jacob's Cure, which was founded by Harrison native Jordana Holovach,  announced it had raised roughly $1,747,000 in contributions in an annual report. The non-profit organization has continued to grow each year since its start in 2000 through noteworthy events and fundraisers.

Last year was especially lucrative for Jacob's Cure because of its "Dream Big" Gala to honor Farrel and Steven Starker for their 10 years of dedication to the organization. The evening supported the research and treatment for Canavan children and raised nearly $1.5 million.

"It was an evening that no one will soon forget and an occasion that continues to benefit our efforts through the introduction of new supporters, new fundraising opportunities and the expansion of research with the introduction of the Farrel and Steven Starker Fellowship for White Matter Disease Research," Holovach said.

Jacob's Cure also increased Internet support in 2010 by adding over 55,000 Web site views and more than 4,000 Facebook fans.

The report also announced a new two-year Clinical Research Training Fellowship to support research into the cause, treatment, or cure for white matter disease. The fellowship will support the development of new independent researches and includes a commitment of $49,500 per year.

A research summit and family conference for those suffering with Canavan Disease was held at the Renaissance Marriott in West Harrison from Friday through Sunday.

The summit was hosted by Jacob's Cure, which was founded by Holovach to save her son, Jacob, who was diagnosed with Canavan Disease at six months old.

"Since Jacob’s diagnosis, I have fought tirelessly to keep him alive," Holovach said. "Currently, our fundraising efforts and research are focused on a stem cell treatment we hope will cure Jacob and perhaps reverse the effects of the disease."

Canavan Disease is a neurological disorder that deteriorates motor skills.
