Also on the list: George Balanchine, Vivian Beaumont, Leonard Bernstein, Avery Fisher, Alice Tully, Wynton Marsalis, Mitzi E. Newhouse, Jerome Robbins, John D. Rockefeller, Ill and Beverly Sills.

Gersten is the founding executive producer of LCT.

The Founding Legends were selected exclusively by Lincoln Center and its resident organizations to reflect the visionaries who worked tirelessly to create world-class arts organizations and a destination that is now visited by over five million people each year. A ceremony for the Founding Legends will take place later this year.

The new initiative is part of Lincoln Center's newly created "Legends at Lincoln Center: The Performing Arts Hall of Fame," which was announced in a press release on Thursday, Feb. 4.

“While athletes and rock stars have long had permanent homes honoring their top achievers, the performing arts had no singular location to pay tribute to our exceptional talent, and inspire future generations, until now,” said Lincoln Center President Jed Bernstein. "Legends at Lincoln Center will be the first hall of fame that honors the artists, leaders, and advocates whose exceptional creativity and tenacity have shaped, and continue to shape, the field of all of the performing arts at Lincoln Center."

All campus resident organizations—The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, The Film Society of Lincoln Center, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Juilliard School, Lincoln Center Theater, The Metropolitan Opera, New York City Ballet, New York Philharmonic, The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, the School of American Ballet, and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts— are participating.

Legends at Lincoln Center will celebrate the performing arts with an annual ceremony recognizing career achievement, exhibitions/installations, and displays in each venue on campus. The inaugural 2016 induction ceremony will take place on Monday, June 20 at Lincoln Center, with the first class of inductees announced next month.

Each year there will be a new class, each of which will go through a thorough campus-wide selection process.
