Just four weeks into a new healthcare graduate program, Dr. Lynn Johnson is already delighted with the results of recruiting Westchester industry professionals to teach at Long Island University's Hudson Graduate Center in Purchase.
Courses for the M.B.A. Healthcare Sector Management degree are being taught by executives from such area organizations as Nyack Hospital, Greenwich Hospital, White Plains's Burke Rehabilitation Center, he said.
The goal: To ensure that Westchester graduate students in the new M.B.A. program have the tools they need to compete in a changing job market.
"The healthcare field is becoming even more complex and demanding of management expertise," said Johnson. "Healthcare professionals today need the kind of skills found in the M.B.A. training."
Johnson, a White Plains resident and M.B.A. Program Director at the Hudson Graduate Center, noted that most enrolled students are already employed in healthcare-related jobs around Westchester.
As part of their two years of study, they will be developing management, financial and organizational skills to help them excel in careers as varied as insurance company manager, hospital administrator or pharmaceuticals executive.
Johnson said he and his colleagues use a variety of teaching techniques, including team projects and small-group discussion as well as lectures. Scott Edelman, the controller at Burke Rehabilitation Center in White Plains; Quinton J. Friesen, executive vice president at Greenwich Hospital in Connecticut; and David Freed, CEO at Nyack Hospital, are among the local healthcare leaders enlisted to teach the courses.
Johnson, a professor of management, is also an experienced executive coach. As an added benefit to these Healthcare M.B.A. students, Johnson guides them by phone or in person as they resolve issues encountered in their day-to-day jobs.
Coaching permits a more one-on-one conversation about the students career goals than usually occurs in the classroom," he said. "Its more action oriented."
Johnson is also active in the local business community. A member of the Business Council of Westchester, he has helped facilitate its business breakfast Dialogue for the past 6 years.
He holds a Ph.D. degree from the University of Michigan and is a graduate of Yale College. A believer in lifelong learning, Johnson has been a delegate from his alma mater to universities in Japan, Turkey, and China through Yales Global Alumni Leadership Exchange.
