Children who participate in the program can expect to do activities such as build roller coasters, design and name their own robots, and partake in a bridge-building “survival exercise.” The camp is organized so each week revolves around a different theme; the robot-building, for example, is a part of the "Tools and Technology" theme.

"It's science, science, science in a very kid-friendly way, so we bring science to where kids already are," said Kathy Heraghty, program director and one of the three founders. "We want it to be playful, so we take toys, gizmos, and gadgets that children would be attracted to and show them how they work though hands-on projects in which they are actually engaged."

Heraghty, a former teacher, said she understands how difficult it is to be to bring science alive for kids. The environment is active, just like most camps, with songs, games and creative challenges.

"They're problem solving and tinkering - they're taking things apart, putting them together, learning about their different traits," she said.

The Purchase Camp will be located at Manhattanville College, with the option or full or half days on the following dates:

  • Aug. 5 to 9: Astronaut Adventure Camp
  • Aug. 12 to 16: Wacky Mega-Bot Tech
  • Aug. 19 to 23: The Ultimate Survival Zone

The camp also is offered on different dates in other Westchester locations, such as New Rochelle, Larchmont, Rye, Scarsdale, Tarrytown, Chappaqua and Bedford.

"We want parents to be able to drop their kids off in a safe, family-friendly environment that isn't too far from home," Heraghty said.

Destination Science teaches kids that science is not just about Bunsen burners and formulas. The summer camp is committed to creating a spirit of teamwork, as kids are rewarded for helping their peers throughout the day, learning the power of community, collaboration and character development.
