White Plains Artist Packs Harrison Public Library

HARRISON, N.Y. – Family and friends of Lorie Gurian, a White Plains-based artist, filled the Harrison Public Library Gallery for her “Natural Fractions” exhibit Monday night. The oil, acrylic, and watercolor paintings, all based on nature, had her admirers in awe.

“This really hits you – it’s stunning,” said Arthur Kreiswirth, who takes an art class with Gurian in New Rochelle, while looking at one of her pieces. “It’s just the intricacy. She is so patient and takes her time. I find it incredible to do this in watercolor.”

His wife, Jane Kreiswirth, was equally astonished and said the depth, darkness, shading, and different colors blew her away. She added that it looked like a picture. The wheat and grass watercolor painting was one of many that ranged from foliage and flowers to the beach.

Gurian was thankful for everyone who came to the Harrison Council for the Arts-sponsored event, including some people she had not seen in years and surprise visits from family.

“It’s just wonderful,” said Gurian of the attendance in her third year at the library. “It’s exciting seeing family that I don’t ordinarily see. I have neighbors here, I belong to New Rochelle Art Association – the president was here. Many people from that organization were here. My teacher was here who I took classes with at the County Center and a lot of his students were here.”

The former math teacher in the Ardsley School District turned to art fulltime after she retired in 2001 as she joined several local art groups. Gurian said that she has made many new friends who are always there to see her work. Her award-winning art has been exhibited in several New York galleries. She said she draws inspiration for the pieces from walks with her husband in local parks and their trips around the world.

Her artwork, part of the month-long exhibits by the Harrison Council for the Arts, will be displayed in the library gallery until Sept. 7.
