Potholes erupt when water slips through cracks in pavement and freezes, expanding and widening the cracks to form holes, according to the New York State Department of Transportation. Asphalt cold-patch mixtures are used as a temporary fix to fill potholes in winter, and permanent pavement repairs are usually done during the warmer construction season.
Several Yorktown residents took to Facebook recently to complain about all of the potholes plaguing Yorktown streets. The Daily Voice reader Mike Singh called the roads “a total nightmare.”
“The recent patchings have cracked open and new holes have formed,” Singh said, referring to potholes he has seen on Stoney Street. “Hopefully during summer the street gets some real repaving.”
Readers pointed out the Taconic State Parkway, Route 202, Ridge Street, Curry Street, Lexington Avenue, Hanover and Granite Springs Road as particular problem areas. Several residents said it might be easier to point out the streets without potholes rather than the ones that need repairs, including Rob Cristofero, who said there wasn’t one area worse than any another. Reader Andrew Brigida agreed.
“I have lived here for over 43 years, what a disgrace Yorktown roads have become,” Brigida said, “and with the taxes some of the highest in the nation, these roads should be like glass.”
Hitting a pothole can not only make for an uncomfortable ride, it can knock the wheels out of alignment, affect steering, damage tires and break suspension of the vehicle, according to AAA.
Residents interested in reporting problem areas and potholes to the Yorktown Highway Department are asked to submit comments on the town’s website.
