PURCHASE, N.Y. American Vanguards 1927-1942, a showcase of paintings and sculptures by John Graham, Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock and other artists opened Sunday at the Neuberger Museum of Art at SUNY Purchase.
The show, which includes more than 60 works of art from the early 1900s and occupies four full rooms in the gallery, runs through April 29. The show documents the modernist work of a group of American and European painters who demonstrate that the period was a time of exciting and important innovation.
Nelli Grigorian, a visitor from Tarrytown, said, "I'm impressed with the collection. It's good to know we can see such high class art in the area."
Dana Mithchell, who strolled her 4-year-old son Tanner through the exhibit, said it was the first time she'd brought him to an art gallery. "I'm trying to get him to recognize great works of art," she said.
