HARRISON, N.Y. -- The Southern Westchester BOCES Center for Professional Development & Curriculum Support has released its annual professional services catalog for 2015-2016.
The catalog contains an array of innovative professional development workshops for local teachers and administrators, focusing on practical ways that teachers can apply the new Common Core Learning State Standards in their classrooms, as well as resources on assessment/scoring, data inquiry, the school library system and much more.
Much of the 95-page catalog is devoted to training based on the Common Core, specifically as it applies to English language arts, math, science and social studies, and how teachers can better prepare their students to adapt to these new requirements when taking state tests and other assessments.
Some courses offered this year include a workshop on how teachers can help struggling boys get from failure to success at the secondary school level, helping students become more engaged readers, bringing math to life through activities and games, turning classrooms into MakerSpaces, encouraging students to be historians in the social science classroom and more.
The center is also committed to helping teachers and administrators deepen their practice. The Great Teachers and Leaders section of the catalog includes a number of important training workshops that focus on teacher and principal improvement plans, teacher evaluator training and developing a progressive discipline plan or policy, among others.
The booklet also includes details on workshops that deal with state regulations, health, safety and violence prevention in schools as well as the center’s slate of training courses that aim to help schools improve in several areas, including compliance with New York’s Dignity for All Students Act, certification in non-violent crisis intervention, fixing classroom academic problems as well as promoting achievement and fostering positive classroom behaviors.
