This year’s annual Spring Spruce Up will be Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19. Join other residents and officials to clean up the roads, parks, wooded areas and streams. Target areas in downtown Harrison include Ma Riis Park, Veteran’s Park, the stream behind LMK Middle School, Beaver Swamp Brook Corridor and West Street (in the vicinity of the Interstate 95 bridge). Target areas in West Harrison include the Boulevard, various locations around Silver Lake and Underhill Avenue and the Village Green.
Feel free to contact the mayor’s office with additional areas that may need attention. Clean-up crew leaders will be at all locations and will provide lawn bags and instructions for sprucing up. The League of Women Voters of Harrison will be having its winter meeting at noon Wednesday, March 4 at the Veteran’s Memorial Building, 210 Halstead Ave. Belmont will be the guest speaker and will be discussing issues concerning Harrison today. The Harrison Public Library now has access to new online resources: Flipster, which allows library patrons to access digital editions of popular magazines; NoveList, the premiere database of reading recommendations; UniversityofFashion, the premier online fashion school for anyone looking to learn about fashion design; and Linda.com, which helps library patrons learn software and business skills to achieve personal and professional goals.
Manhattanville College is opening its doors and expanding its intellectual offerings to the residents and businesses of Harrison by bringing America’s best journalists, scientists and historians for a series of stimulating and provocative lectures called “Castle Conversations.” The subscription series begins with Arianna Huffington, founder of the Huffington Post, March 25; Dan Rather, veteran anchorman and reporter, June 24; Neil deGrasse Tyson, astrophysicist and director of Hayden Planetarium, host of the NOVA ScienceNow series, and “Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey,” Sept. 9; and Pulitzer Prize winner Doris Kearns Goodwin, noted historian and author, Dec. 2.
