A crane from the construction site of the new span of the Tappan Zee Bridge collapsed on the old span near the Rockland County side around noon on Tuesday, shutting down lanes in both directions for around six hours.

Northbound lanes reopened at 5:15 p.m. with at least two southbound lanes expected to reopen in the early evening.

Five non-threatening injuries occurred, including two bridge workers and three motorists who apparently were trying to avoid the collapsing bridge, authorities said.

Crews worked throughout the afternoon to cut the crane up in order to remove it from the span.

At approximately 1:45 p.m., motorists who had been stuck on the bridge for nearly two hours began to exit the bridge through the center median.

A diversion plan was implemented by the Thruway Authority. In Clarkstown, local officers blocked southbound entrance ramps, which includes Exits 11, 12, 13, and 14, the department announced on their Facebook page.

Authorities announced around 2:20 p.m. that all emergency units were released from the scene and an investigation into the incident is underway.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo traveled by helicopter to Tarrytown for an afternoon press conference. For more on that, click here.
