HARRISON, N.Y.-- Book critic James Wood and novelist Tim O’Brien will speak at Purchase College this fall.

Wood will speak on Sept. 19 at 4:30 p.m. as part of the Burt Sachs Memorial Lecture series. He will deliver “Why: Fiction and the Biggest Question” at the College’s Neuberger Museum of Art Study.

Wood is a staff writer and book critic for The New Yorker magazine and a professor of the practice of literary criticism at Harvard University.

Prior to joining The New Yorker, he was the chief literary critic at The Guardian in London from 1992 to 1995 and a senior editor at The New Republic from 1995 to 2007.

O’Brien will present “How To Tell A True War Story,” on Oct. 9 at 4:30 p.m. in the college’s Performing Arts Center Recital Hall.

O'Brien was recently named the recipient of the 2013 Pritzker Military Library Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing. It marked the first time the award was ever given to a fiction author.

O'Brien's best-known work of fiction is the critically acclaimed "The Things They Carried," a collection of semi-autobiographical, inter-related short stories inspired by his own wartime experience in Vietnam, where he served from 1968 to 1970.

Both lectures will be followed by a book signing and reception and are free and open to the public.
